Situated in the Northwest of Tunisia (36°11Nord and 8°43Est), in 175 km. On the West of Tunis and in 40 km east of the Algerian borders, the city of Kef is, since the highest Antiquity(Antique), the main city of Haut-Tell, the Tunisian Northwest and good part(party) east Algerian, the political center of which it established(constituted), until recent date, the most importing religious center and the dominant fortified town. The presence, near, of the oldest Tunisian archeological site to Sidi Zin, in the valley of Oued Mellègue, lets think that the region of Kef was one of the first ones(nights) occupied by the prehistoric man. Later, he(it) becomes established on the heights of Kef ( Djebel Dyr), in the locality Sidi Mansour. He was able to take advantage of plentiful one source(spring) of water there, an easily defensible site in the heart of an abounding in game region as well as of a natural refuge in the local caves. Still visible rock paintings testify of his(her, its) passage ( esh-Shgega ). The megalithic time(period) was to be prosperous, if we judge it by the numerous megalithic vestiges which crossed the centuries to reach until us (Hram de Sidi Mansour). Many regrettably disappeared, witnesses(batons) of the first homes(foyers) of sedentary populating which had to give birth to the city. The Carthaginian influence reached(affected) the city to 5 ème s BC, as gives evidence of him(it) the discovery of rests of Punic ceramic of IVth s BC, during the construction of the ramparts of the city ( Borj Glel). His(Her,Its) perched site, rich in water, brought on the city the protection of Ashtar (or Astarté), goddess of the fertility. This worship(cult) is maybe at the origin of the first name of the city, Cirta (Chirta = Kirta), meaning very probably: sacred height-place, sanctuary dedicated to Ashtar: has - chirta. Cirta was, already from the time(period) numide, a city-temple and a center of pilgrimage, allowing the creation of political alliances(wedding rings) with the nearby cities amphictyonie ). This native(autochtonous) territorial organization will survive later, in the Roman time(period), under the names of " pertica " and " castellae ". The city passed afterward under the control of Numides massaesyles. Syphax, king of the Numides, made of Cirta a residence from 205 BC Massinissa (203-148 BC), king of The name of Cirta was however used in the native(autochtonous) circles until IVth century. Sicca is indicated by most of the geographical sources(springs) former(ancient) as in Pline, Ptolémée, Antonin's Route and the Table of Peutinger. She(it) is in the center of an important crossroads, it is the most important station(resort) on the way which connects Carthage with Cirta ( Constantine). The city, supervised by the ordo of Siccenses, had to know a remarkable urban and architectural evolution marked by important monumental realizations: forums, Capitol, temples, theater, amphitheatre(lecture hall), triumphal arches, honorary monuments. The water supply was assured(insured) by an aqueduct to supply to the main source Ras el Aîn. The abundance in water allowed to develop an important network of adduction and evacuation still used nowadays. An important thermal complex lives in the daytime at about 3rd century ap. J.C.
